Turbi – wind energy for everyone
My innovation is a micro-scale wind turbine, Turbi, for charging any kind of electronic devices such as laptop, speakers, phone, smart watch, etc. - suitable for any kind of apartment/studio/house as long as you have a window.

The micro-scale wind turbine is designed in a way that it benefits from advantages of vertical and horizontal wind turbines combined at the same time.
Vertical wind turbines have the positive ability to be wind direction independent and can extract energy from the wind without moving the rotor perpendicular to the wind direction. On the other side, horizontal wind turbines have higher efficiency as their tip speed ratio is not as much negative influenced from the dragging forces.
This behavior of Turbi has been achieved through redirecting the wind direction within the turbine design, so that the vertical installed rotor blade is constantly exposed to a perpendicular wind direction.
With the wind velocities in the Netherlands, Turbi is promising to generate enough energy to charge laptop and phone once a day with green energy.
The idea for Turbi has been derived from three observations in our current society:
1) More awareness throughout society towards global warming – everyone wants to participate in saving our planet
2) Greater usage of portable electronic devices (smart watch, phone, laptop, speaker, etc.) – ascending trend
3) Urbanization – more and more people live in studios/ apartments in cities without the ability to produce their own green energy through solar panels on the rooftop or a bigger wind turbine installed in the garden
Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?
1) Building turbine design and rotor blade construction to measure torque and angular velocity of mechanical design in a wind tunnel
2) Designing and building axial flux iron less generator suitable for torque and angular velocity generated from rotor blade design
3) Implementing maximum power point tracking (MPPT) charge controller to mechanical system
4) Product validation through complete system measurements
Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?
Turbi can have great impact on two things:
– increase of green energy production through society
– awareness of green energy production, getting familiar with sustainable energy sources as a hand on generator in your home
To achieve those impacts satisfactory, it would be of great help to:
1) Creating a production line for mass commercial use of Turbi
2) Marketing strategy: surveys, market analysis, platforms, end consumers
