Housing in the Netherlands is a challenge, the United Nations recognizes the economic, social and cultural right to adaquate housing and shelter as a human right. The challenge is even more immense for international students who seek to study in the country. We aim to solve the Dutch housing crisis by offering an economically viable solution for shelter which aims to promote sustainability and environmental friendliness. Student Paviljoen aims to build container housing villages throughout the Netherlands composed of small 25 sq. meter studio container apartments.
Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??
Existing solutions are “old-school”. The current situation in the Netharlands is only getting worse proving that these solutions do not suffice or do not work, the cost of living throughout the world has sky-rocketed which makes a modern solution needed. Our idea promotes the construction of prefabricated container housing which is easy to build in a very short amount of time while it also promotes the low-cost concept we are aiming for. We aim to promote affordable housing while implementing the idea of construction with eco-friendly materials, looking out for the longevity of our planet and the wellbeing of the environment around us, thus, killing two birds with one stone.
To date there are no other innitiaves that promote sustainable housing construction while also offering low cost solutions to the problem. Current firms exploit students for their own good, this is a very dangerous approach since a majority of students finance their studies thus creating cripling debt that is deemed to harm the society as a whole. Other firms have been proven to even exploit students through mallicious practices which are illegal and against Dutch law, we want to fix that.
Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?
The team so far has conducted some research on the subject discovering the costs associated with this innitiative. We have contacted a plethora of suppliers and have narrowed down our search to a Dutch construction firm which appears promising. Next steps would be to discuss the legal framework behind our idea with some professionals in the industry. After that we plan to conduct market research to discover the most suitable location for a small “demo” village consisting of 20 studios. Finally, seek for funding to launch our first village.
Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?
Currently the problem we are mainly facing is guidance from industry players. Funding is not a problem yet however our idea is capital intensive so it is bound to be a problem in the near future. If we received guidance from a trusted mentor we belive we could excel and proceed with our idea.
