Sight-change your phone habit

We are developing a wearable ring or wristband that seamlessly activates a distraction-free mode on your phone with a single tap, helping users reduce mindless scrolling and stay focused. By combining tangible interaction with digital restriction, we make intentional phone use effortless and support long-term healthy technology habits.

This initiative is also part of my master’s graduation project, where I investigate how to address digital distraction as a growing societal issue affecting our generation and those to come. We are surrounded by devices designed to capture our attention, often leading to mindless scrolling and reduced well-being. During my research and co-design workshops with young adults, I realised that while many want to reduce their screen time, the friction of accessing digital wellbeing tools on the phone itself often leads to giving up in moments of temptation. This insight led me to combine a tangible wearable device—a ring or wristband—with a distraction-free phone system, allowing users to switch into focus mode instantly with a physical action. By creating this seamless bridge between intention and action, we aim to empower users to reclaim control over their attention in daily life.

Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??

Most existing solutions rely solely on blocking apps or notifications to avoid distractions, but they miss the opportunity to help people make better decisions about how to use their time and guide them toward positive behaviour change. Our solution combines a tangible wearable with a distraction-free system that not only blocks distractions with a simple gesture but also nudges users to reflect on their intentions and choose meaningful alternative activities. By lowering friction and providing guidance rather than only restriction, we support users in building healthier phone habits for the long term.

Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?

The next steps will follow a structured design and validation process. I will first investigate user needs and preferences for tangible distraction control through interviews and co-design workshops, identifying the most promising formats (such as wearables) in real-life contexts. Building on findings from my master’s research, I will create low-fidelity prototypes and conduct user tests to evaluate usability, behavioural influence, and social signalling, ensuring the solution effectively guides users to make better choices, not just block distractions. Based on these insights, I will select one concept for final development, iterating with user and expert feedback to refine functionality, form, and user experience. This staged approach will allow me to test feasibility, demonstrate impact, and prepare for a high-fidelity prototype that can be piloted in daily routines to explore long-term behaviour change.

Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?

To maximise impact, I need the resources and partnerships to validate the solution with real users in everyday life. Testing with diverse participants will ensure the wearable truly supports those who struggle with digital distraction, while refining the system to match their needs and contexts. I will also need technical support to build reliable, user-friendly prototypes, including hardware development (ring/wristband), connectivity integration with smartphones, and a distraction-free software layer that can adapt to different user goals. Finally, to bring this idea from concept to reality, I seek connections with mentors, behavioural scientists, and potential distribution partners who share the vision of tackling digital distraction for the people who need it most, not for profit, but to create a healthier digital culture for our generation.
