I have been studying a MSc of Software Engineering and Green IT at the VU Amsterdam, with the goal of learning how to make software more sustainable for many people with little work on their part. Through these studies I learned more about the energy efficiencies of cloud functions and that is when the idea struck me. Since having this idea, we have built out the technology and recently Nano API received a commitment from our first pilot customer.

This tool works by using an algorithm to analyze a user’s codebase and logically break it apart, deploying each section of code ( API endpoint ) as a separate cloud function, which are cheaper to host, easy to scale, and more energy efficient than standard hosting options.

Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??

Existing solutions to this are impossible to switch to as they require the budget and developer time to spend 6 + months re-writing existing code to be able to use these tools. On top of this, these tools require a lot of configuration that adds bloat to a codebase for no reason.

Additionally, to switch to cloud functions would normally require hiring a cloud specialist, who are much more expensive to hire than a normal web developer. We enable companies to switch to serverless cloud functions without hiring specialty knowledge for it.

Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?

We ( myself and a cofounder ) are currently in the process of re-writing our MVP to be able to perform at scale. At the same time, we are onboarding a CFO who can help with business development, sales, and marketing. The goal is to scale out to support additional users and then spend time cold-calling, marketing, and improving our sales pipeline to attract as many new customers as possible.

Once we have a steady stream of users we can re-evaluate the options for funding, and potentially get funded to continuous operations for the next few years.

Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?

A wide network and good PR. This idea is amazing and any developer who comes across it would see its value instantly. I just need for them to be able to see it.

That’s why winning most innovative student would be helpful to me, so I can more easily spread the word about Nano API.
