Making oral liquid morphine accessible in Uganda

There is a lack of knowledge in Uganda about oral liquid morphine. To improve the healthcare in Uganda it is necessary to widen the knowledge of patients and healthcare professionals, by making posters and advertisements about morphine and palliative care it could make a huge impact on giving the right information to them.

We did a research in Uganda about the barriers in the use of oral liquid morphine for pain treatment in palliative care at Hospice Africa Uganda. During this research we have found several barriers. The eye-cathching barrier was the scarcity of knowledge patients have about morphine. Not only do they know little about morphine, they also believe in myths and misconceptions told in the communities, such as that morphine is a euthanasia drug. To help Uganda overcome this barrier, we want to make posters and an advertising/information commercial to broaden the knowledge of the people in Uganda.

This innovative idea will help palliative patients in Uganda.

Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??

No solutions have ever been developt in Uganda for this issue. We want to make a start to overcome some of the barriers found during the research, by giving them the correct information they need about morphine. Since nothing has ever been attempted to overcome such barriers, we believe that it would be an innovative solution to the morphine issue in Uganda.

Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?

Next steps of this innovation would be to hire a cinematographer that can design and make the information commercial. We would make an information poster that we could distribute around the whole of Uganda. And lastly we would need to arrange a partnership with the Ministry of Health of Uganda and with the national radio/television.

Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?

The most crucial factor to make a bigger impact with this innovation is the support and collaboration of Uganda.
