EmitO
EmitO is a startup created by two students who developed the concept of CO2 tracking and reduction of commuting emissions in collaboration with the Dutch Police as part of a university project. After the project ended, the intellectual property was transferred to the startup to further develop the concept.

Heb je jouw initiatief al gevalideerd? / Did you validate your initiative?
A comprehensive business plan has been created, which helped to secure our first investor/partner. We have established multiple appearances at web events and features within the Cleantech region to find launching customers. To check and validate the core principles of the concept, a pilot program has been conducted within a small group of the HAN, using the functional prototype of the app.

Most organizations are struggling to meet upcoming CO2 emission regulations as well as to achieve a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, which can be detrimental to the sustainability of both the environment and the company itself. EmitO has been developed to ensure that companies can focus on their core business while still achieving their goals of reducing CO2 emissions. EmitO’s mobile app, which is provided to every employee, automatically detects the mode of transport and subtracts the specific CO2 emissions caused by the commute from a monthly CO2 budget. This budget is created based on the overall organization’s CO2 emissions, with a specific focus on commuting, which is then divided by the number of employees. This ensures fairness in the allocation of the budget, leading to a more sustainable and health-conscious approach to commuting.
Moreover, the app provides features that allow employees to trade CO2 credits and incentives for sustainable traveling, which can encourage employees to make more sustainable decisions. The app also includes gamification features that offer monthly challenges as well as challenges between employees and departments, leading to a more engaging and fun commuting experience.
EmitO’s unique awareness and urgency plan, tailored to each company, fosters a sense of change among employees, ensuring that everyone understands the importance of sustainability and health.
Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??
Within a fast growing sector of CO2 tracking, the competition is continuously evolving, but stated below are the core principles and USPs of this specific concept.
The unique selling points (USPs) of EmitO are clearly the equal CO2 budget provided to every employee at the beginning of each month. This feature ensures that all employees start on an equal footing, with the same initial CO2 allowance. The budget is gradually reduced on a monthly basis, in line with the goal of achieving a 55% reduction by 2030. The EmitO specific marketplace allows sustainable users to gain benefits by trading their CO2 balance to people in other usage scenarios. The gamification aspect of the app, through challenges among employees and departments, fosters a sense of competition and encourages individuals to be more sustainable than their colleagues. Moreover, this approach ensures fairness, as each employee starts the month with the same budget. Taking this into acount EmitO promotes the adoption of sustainable commuting alternatives by incentivizing them and making them financially more attractive than non-sustainable options.
Additionally, the awareness and urgency plan ensures that the entire organization is informed about the initiative’s goals, empowering each employee to contribute towards the ultimate objective. By promoting sustainability, EmitO is not only helping companies comply with CO2 emission regulations, but also encouraging more sustainable commuting practices, making it a win-win for both the company and the employees.
Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?
- Initiating app development: We are starting the development process, creating the app with a focus on user interface, feature integration, and a seamless experience.
- Further prototype testing: To improve the app’s functionality, we will conduct additional prototype tests, gathering user feedback and making necessary adjustments before the final release.
- Providing the app to initial customers: We plan to offer the app to a selected group of customers who have not been contracted yet, allowing us to gain early insights, validate its effectiveness, and refine it based on real-world usage data.
- Collaborating with HAN University of Applied Sciences: We are in discussions with HAN University of Applied Sciences in Arnhem to establish a partnership were we will test the prototype within a small target group to gather feedback on the App experience, functionality and usability to understand the possible impact.
- Assessing awareness, urgency, and CO2 tracking: We will evaluate the effectiveness of our awareness and urgency plan, as well as the CO2 tracking feature, in influencing user behavior and promoting environmental impact, refining them accordingly.
