In the short to mid-term, Edion is developing an integrated educational platform that seamlessly combines an AI Teaching Assistant with an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), both designed to enhance the educational experience for teachers and students alike.

The AI teaching assistant is a hybrid model that significantly reduces time spent by teachers on administrative and educational tasks such as grading, generating tests and exercises, producing detailed reports, and creating customized lesson plans tailored to curriculum requirements. This allows them to dedicate more time to personalized teaching and student engagement.

Tightly integrated with the Teaching Assistant, and inspired by the engagement mechanics of content platforms like TikTok, the Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) personalizes any student’s learning path based on inputs from their teacher(s). It includes quizzes, interactive exercises, guided tasks, and comprehensive overviews, dynamically adjusting the content it delivers and its size (e.g., bit-sized vs long-form) to maximize student engagement and learning efficacy. The ITS utilizes a sophisticated recommendation algorithm to ensure content is both relevant and engaging, changing subjects as necessary to maintain student focus and maximize learning outcomes.

Both the Teaching Assistant and the ITS come in the form of a conversational app (cApp), Edion wants to pioneer. Just as their name suggests, cApps are applications that are more than interactive: they are seemingly alive. A large portion of teachers lie in the 40-50+ age range and tend to have limited technological knowledge. cApps address this UX issue by offering teachers the ability to interact with them through speech or text. Instead of learning how to use an app, a user can simply converse with the app and make their demands clear. This ensures that any of our products remain accessible by anyone, regardless of their age or background.

The synergy between the AI Teaching Assistant and the ITS creates a dynamic educational environment where teachers input curriculum goals and student-specific information. This data informs the ITS, which then tailors the learning experience for each student, ensuring they receive content that aligns with their educational needs and personal goals. Teachers receive ongoing, detailed analytics from the Teaching Assistant about each student’s progress, strengths, and areas needing attention, along with pedagogical recommendations to further enhance teaching strategies.

This interconnected system is designed to be adaptable across various educational settings and professional development contexts, including higher education and continuous learning in professions such as medicine, law, and government. By providing a continuous feedback loop between the teaching and learning components, Edion aims to revolutionize the educational landscape by making it more efficient, personalized, and responsive to both teacher and student needs.

Our long-term vision is to combine the Teaching Assistant and the ITS and use our blockchain knowledge to create a standalone decentralized autonomous school that aims to shift the role of traditional schools from education providers (institutions) to education upholders (infrastructure). In this long-term vision, schools are still necessary but instead, act as a physical tether or middleman for education. Teachers and other educators can then become independent workers (better wages, more reward going to the teacher rather than the school) and offer their services on Edion, without having to be contracted through schools. Similarly, primary/secondary-level students who don’t have access to a standardized education or tertiary-level students who don’t have the money can have these needs met if they have any form of technology that can access the internet. To put it into an analogy, if the autonomous system we ultimately aim to deploy is the buffet, then schools are the venue hosting it.

Wat is er anders/nieuw aan jouw idee/oplossing t.o.v. bestaande oplossingen? / What is different/new about your idea/solution compared to existing solutions??

Traditional LMS providers like D2L Brightspace or FariaOne and more affordable (Dutch) regional LMSs like Parnassys/Somtoday/Magister offer template-based services that leave teachers unsatisfied. LMSs like Anthology have some AI solutions, but like all large LMSs are still unaffordable by most schools. Specialized companies like Toddle, Diffit, and LessonUp either choose the outdated template approach or sell ChatGPT wrappers as a service. We listened to schools, teachers, parents, and students, to innovate the market with conversational apps tested by educators and accessible to any budget and skillset.

As such, we introduce report-generation, content-generation, automated marking and recommender systems tested and vetted by teachers, wrapped in the novel concept of a cApp. Technology isn’t easy to use, and AI is hardly explainable. All of our tools exist as conversational applications (cApps): lifelike applications designed to meet any educator’s needs through a speech-first interface. With the capacity to explain their reasoning and actions, cApps align with everyday communication by enabling users to interact with software in a conversational manner. This significantly enhances user experience and efficiency and makes the technology accessible to everyone regardless of their digital skills.

Simultaneously, we offer competitive pay-per-use (e.g., per report) and per-teacher plans that are affordable by any school worldwide. For schools that want to distribute these tools to all of their teachers, we offer a flexible school-wide subscription priced on the basis of the school’s needs. This strategy meets immediate demands, ensures that all types of users are comfortably satisfied, and supports long-term scalability.

Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?

We are currently in possession of a functional prototype, which we are refining with a group of teachers that we have interviewed in the past. In parallel to this, we are developing an initial UI/UX that will serve as the base for our app (before it is eventually upgraded to a cApp).  Our next major milestones include completing the report-generation MVP by August 2024 and the full content-generation prototype by December 2024. We plan to begin pilot programs in selected schools to gather more user feedback and further refine our product. Our long-term goal is to develop a fully integrated AI Teaching Assistant and Intelligent Tutoring System by 2027.

Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?

We could use help, advice, and experience in three main areas: finding an individual who has experience launching businesses specifically in the Education sector, finding an individual who has experience with traditional marketing/digital marketing, and obtaining legal help.

The first would aid us in obtaining a better idea of the idiosyncrasies of the Educational sector, a kind of knowledge and experience that is normally only crystallized given enough years in the industry. This could be useful in our approach to onboarding our initial customers, better understanding operative tropes, and preventing any common mistakes or misunderstandings that only experienced players are aware of. Marketing experience/expertise would help us kickstart our marketing campaigns, as marketing is one area of expertise that our team lacks. Lastly, legal expertise can help us ensure we remain within the confines of the GDPR as well as gain awareness of our position according to IP law.
