Foam is doorgaans gebaseerd op plastic wat resulteert in enorm veel afval aangezien de levensduur van het materiaal veel langer is dan het gebruik van het product. Archive no. 1 FOAM, een archief vol potentie in de vorm van een biologisch afbreekbaar zachtschuim, brengt hier verandering in!

It is commonly thought that, in order to reduce waste, lengthening the lifetime of products is essential. By either re-using, re-purposing or re-cycling them. But why not rethink the material we use in products to match their time of existence to their time of usage?
In the Netherlands alone, every year, a volume of about 230 Olympic swimming pools full of styrofoam is thrown away, whereas most types of foam will only degrade in a timespan of 50 to 500 years. Designer Lisanne Peters developed ‘Archive no. 1 FOAM’ in contrast to that. She created a new, soft and foam-like material using only plant-based ingredients, that can be completely biodegraded in only 3 weeks after usage. Whereby opening the door for us to consider more applications for this temporary material.
In addition to creating a material archive, Lisanne also made a book in which presents the material development of ‘Archive no. 1 FOAM’ alongside interviews with various experts. Her aim with the book is to spread knowledge about how we can make biodegradable materials more widely accessible.

Er bestaan een aantal volledig biologisch afbreekbare foam. Dit zijn echter harde foams zoals papierfoam en popcornfoam. Een zacht schuim dat 100% biologisch afbreekbaar is, is nieuw en hard nodig in deze wereld.
Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?
Verder onderzoek naar het materiaal is altijd bruikbaar. Hiervoor ben ik opzoek naar subsidies die ik hiervoor kan krijgen of door middel van klanten die in dit materiaal potentie zien om het bijvoorbeeld akoestische wand panelen of verpakkingsmateriaal te maken en bereid zijn om hierin te investeren.
Daarnaast zou ik graag mijn boek willen uitbrengen bij een uitgever. Het boek is gemaakt om kennis over biologisch afbreekbaar materiaal te vergroten.
Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?
Tijd, ruimte en geld. Ik heb tijd nodig om het materiaal verder te kunnen onderzoeken en een ruimte nodig met goede tools om het onderzoek kwalitatief goed uit te kunnen voeren.
Geld heb ik vanzelfsprekend nodig om mezelf te kunnen onderhouden, maar ook om te kunnen investeren in grotere machines en de eerste echte producten te kunnen ontwikkelen.
