CryoCOP was started in 2021 22nd April (Earth day) through the 4TU carbon removal competition. During the initial phase, we designed a robust technology with unique features to make carbon capture more efficient and economical. This design was pre-validated through the lab experiments in Eindhoven University of Technology with pre-existing equipment and through rigorous process modelling. During 2022, CryoCOP focused on business development and the TU Delft Impact Contest seeded for the progress. We conducted market assessment during this contest and have pre-validated our market and business model. Our next phase of validation will be the technology proof of concept experiments in Twente University in which we would need around 50k-100K Euro and this will mostly be acquired through public research funds. We are currently following two leads, one through ISPT (Institute for Sustainable Process technology) circular carbon program and the other through EIC (European Innovation Council) Pathfinder Challenge: Carbon dioxide and nitrogen management and valorisation proposal. Through the initial proof of concept, we envision to attract more interest and funding for the pilot and demonstration scale plants in the Netherlands. The demonstration plant will be the first time the product will reach the customer and this is planned around 2027.

The world needs to transition from a fossil based CO2 emitting economy to a CO2 neutral economy by 2050! Most of the energy sector seems to have found green solutions but the industrial sector is still waiting for its silver bullet. The governments are starting to use carbon tax as an instrument to drive industries to greener solutions and it is expected that by 2030, the carbon tax will be as high as around 120 Euro/ton CO2 . In the future companies will face significant financial burden as carbon tax, if carbon capture & storage or clean technologies are not implemented.

But most of the existing solutions are either expensive or does not have a viable business model for the industries. For example, companies are pushed to choose between expensive clean H2 or install carbon capture technologies which produce low pressure gaseous CO2 as product. Low pressure gaseous CO2 has limited applications and this product has to be transformed into high pressure or liquid CO2 for usage or storage. Also, all carbon capture technologies are energy intense, and the existing technologies spend all this energy to recover just around 6% of the total waste. We at CryoCOP has developed a revolutionary carbon capture technology which can overcome these challenges and convert around 96% of the total waste to product!

The proposed propriety technology intents to removes CO2 from point sources (like industrial combustion flue gases) which consists mainly of N2 , O2 and CO2 to make industrial grade gases. The highlights of this technology over conventional CO2 capture technologies are that:

  • no solvent is required for the capture process.
  • electricity is the required energy source and thus opens the possibility to achieve the gold standard ´Net zero emissions´ by using green electricity.
  • CO2 is captured in liquid state at a cost of 20-40 Euro/ton of CO2 .
  • High energy efficiency due to process integration of cryogenic gas separation
  • It converts 96% of the waste to products (N2 , O2 and CO2 ), eliminates emission problems and creates CO2 circularity

Hence the business model of CryoCOP is to convert waste gas to valuable industrial gases and generate revenue from both emission cleaning and industrial grade gas sales. Our research team is led by well-established academicians: Associate professor Srinivas Vanapalli (TU Twente) and Assistant professor Ivo Roghair (TU Eindhoven).

We believe our revolutionary cryogenic carbon capture technology will change the field of carbon capture at a disruptive price and help industries to achieve their climate targets with a viable business model.

Wat zijn jouw volgende stappen om het verder te ontwikkelen? / What are your next steps to develop the initiative?

For our next steps, we distinguish three development and investment phases: 1) the proof-of-concept, 2) pilot plant, and 3) full demonstration plant.

Wat heb je nodig om (nog meer) impact te maken met dit initiatief? / What do you need to make (more) impact with this initiative?

The initiates such as ‘Innovate’ help student to bring out their revolutionary ideas and concepts to the world at a wide reaching platform. We CryoCOP intent to use this platform to attract more interest and investment around our revolutionary technology, to create an impact in the world!
